Which Network Has the Best Data Plan in Nigeria? MTN, Glo, Airtel or 9mobile

With data becoming as essential as air in Nigeria's digital economy, the question on every subscriber's mind is: which network has the best data plan? The answer depends on what you value most — price per gigabyte, network coverage, download speed, or bonus offers like night data and social media bundles.

Nigeria's four major mobile network operators — MTN, Glo, Airtel and 9mobile — each have distinct strengths. MTN leads in coverage and reliability[reference:0][reference:1], Glo offers the cheapest data per GB[reference:2][reference:3], Airtel boasts the fastest 5G availability in urban centres[reference:4], and 9mobile provides less congested networks in cities[reference:5].

In this comprehensive guide, we break down the data plans of all four networks, compare prices, data volumes, validity periods, and special offers, and help you decide which network truly has the best data plan for your specific needs.

Nigeria's Mobile Networks at a Glance

Before diving into the plans, here is a quick overview of each network's strengths and weaknesses as of 2026.

MTN delivers the most consistent experience nationwide[reference:8], while Airtel leads in 5G availability with 36.3% — comfortably ahead of MTN's 26.8%[reference:9]. Glo has the lowest latency, meaning faster response times[reference:10].

MTN Data Plans — Coverage King

MTN is Nigeria's largest network with over 80 million subscribers and the widest 4G LTE coverage across all 36 states and the FCT[reference:11]. MTN's data plans tend to be priced slightly higher than competitors, but the coverage advantage means you actually get to use the data you buy[reference:12]. MTN also offers data rollover on select plans[reference:13].

MTN Verdict: If you travel frequently or live outside major cities, MTN's superior coverage makes it the most reliable choice. MTN handles Zoom calls and VoIP better than most networks[reference:15]. The trade‑off is slightly higher prices compared to Glo.

Glo Data Plans — The Budget Champion

Glo has historically been the budget‑friendly network, offering more data for less money than any competitor[reference:16]. In 2026, Glo reinforced this position with its "More Data More Value" offer, giving nearly 10% more data across its bundles[reference:17].

Glo's monthly plans are particularly attractive. The ₦1,500 plan delivers a total of 5.2GB (2.2GB main data + 3GB night data)[reference:18]. The ₦2,000 monthly option gives 6.25GB (3.25GB main + 3GB night)[reference:19], while the ₦5,000 plan provides 16.5GB (14.5GB main + 2GB night)[reference:20]. For heavy users, the ₦10,000 plan offers 42GB total (38GB main + 4GB night), and the ₦15,000 package delivers a massive 64GB[reference:21].

Glo's night data bonuses are a major draw — you get significant extra data for use between midnight and 5 AM, perfect for heavy downloads and streaming[reference:24].

Glo Verdict: If you want the cheapest data per gigabyte and live in an area with good Glo coverage, Glo is the clear winner. The ₦1,500 monthly plan gives you 5.2GB — more data than any other network at that price point.

Airtel Data Plans — Urban Speed & Promos

Airtel is the second‑largest network and has been aggressively expanding its 4G footprint. In Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and other major cities, Airtel's speeds often match or exceed MTN[reference:25]. Airtel also runs more promotional offers than any other network[reference:26] and has the highest 5G availability in Nigeria[reference:27].

Airtel's Binge plans are particularly attractive for streamers — the ₦1,500 weekly plan gives 5GB + 2GB YouTube Night[reference:28].

Airtel Verdict: If you are based in a major city, stream a lot of video, and want access to 5G, Airtel is an excellent choice. Its promotional offers and Binge plans provide great value for heavy data users.

9mobile Data Plans — The Urban Underdog

9mobile has the smallest subscriber base of the big four but maintains decent coverage in major urban areas[reference:32]. Its networks are less congested than MTN or Airtel in many locations, which can mean faster actual speeds during peak hours[reference:33]. However, 9mobile's rural coverage is limited, so it works best as a primary SIM only if you are based in a city[reference:34].

9mobile offers competitive pricing for medium users. The 7GB weekly plan for ₦1,500 is particularly good value[reference:35].

9mobile also offers evening and weekend plans: 2GB evening + weekend for ₦1,000 (30 days), and 5GB evening + weekend + 100MB WhatsApp for ₦2,000 (30 days)[reference:37].

9mobile Verdict: If you live in a major city and want a less congested network with competitive pricing, 9mobile is worth considering. The 7GB weekly plan for ₦1,500 is one of the best weekly deals available.

Head‑to‑Head Comparison: Which Network Wins?

To help you decide, here is a direct comparison of the best plans from each network at similar price points.

Glo consistently offers the most data per naira across all price points. At ₦1,500, you get 5.2GB from Glo compared to 2GB from MTN or 3GB from Airtel. At ₦5,000, Glo gives you 16.5GB versus 10GB from MTN.

However, data volume is not the only factor. Coverage, speed, and reliability matter just as much.
